Our Story

MosquitoRepellent.au was born from a simple frustration: finding reliable, Australian-specific information about mosquito protection shouldn't be so difficult. As a team of outdoor enthusiasts who spend countless hours hiking through tropical Queensland rainforests, camping along Northern Territory billabongs, and fishing in the mangroves of Western Australia, we've learned firsthand just how aggressive Australian mosquitoes can be—and how important proper protection is.

Our journey began in 2024 when our founder, after a particularly memorable camping trip to Kakadu National Park that resulted in over fifty mosquito bites despite using a supposedly "effective" repellent, decided enough was enough. That experience sparked months of research into repellent formulations, active ingredients, and the unique challenges posed by Australian mosquito species.

What we discovered was surprising: much of the information available online was either American-centric (ignoring the specific species and conditions found in Australia), outdated, or simply marketing dressed up as advice. We found that many Australians were either over-relying on ineffective natural remedies or avoiding proven ingredients like DEET due to misconceptions about safety.

What We Do

Today, MosquitoRepellent.au serves as Australia's dedicated resource for mosquito protection information. Our team spends hundreds of hours each year researching repellent formulations, analysing peer-reviewed studies from Australian universities and the CSIRO, and field-testing products in real Australian conditions—from the humid tropics of Far North Queensland to the coastal wetlands of Victoria.

We don't just read product labels; we dig into the science behind active ingredients like DEET (N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide), Picaridin (also known as Icaridin), PMD (p-Menthane-3,8-diol), and essential oils. We understand the difference between mosquito species like Aedes vigilax (the saltmarsh mosquito), Culex annulirostris (the common banded mosquito), and Aedes notoscriptus (the backyard mosquito), and how different repellents perform against each.

Our Commitment to You

We believe in transparency above all else. When we recommend a product, we explain exactly why—whether it's the concentration of active ingredients, the duration of protection, or suitability for specific uses like water sports or bushwalking. We also clearly disclose our affiliate relationships: when you purchase a product through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This helps fund our research and keeps this site free for all Australians.

However, our recommendations are never influenced by affiliate potential. We've recommended many products that don't have affiliate programs simply because they're the best option for certain situations. Our reputation depends on providing honest, helpful advice—and that will always come first.

Our Mission

Mosquito-borne diseases like Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus, and Japanese encephalitis affect thousands of Australians each year. With climate change extending mosquito seasons and expanding their range southward, effective protection has never been more important. Our mission is simple: help every Australian family enjoy the outdoors safely by providing accurate, research-backed information about mosquito protection.

Whether you're planning a family camping trip to the Kimberley, protecting your baby in the backyard, or simply trying to enjoy a summer barbecue without becoming a mosquito buffet, we're here to help you find the right protection for your needs.
